How Do I Fix My Sliding Glass Door?
Nine times out of ten the door isn't dead — the rollers or track are. Here's how to tell what yours needs.
The short answer
If your sliding glass door is hard to open, grinds, squeals, or you have to lift it to close, the problem is almost always the running gear — worn rollers or a pitted track — not the door itself. That hardware can be rebuilt in one visit for a fraction of the cost of a new door.
Start with our sliding glass door repair page to match your symptom, or go straight to roller replacement if the door is heavy and noisy, or track repair and capping if it grinds and bumps along the rail.
- •Hard to open or needs two hands: worn or seized rollers
- •Grinding or scraping noise: rollers riding on a pitted track
- •Have to lift the door to close or lock it: collapsed rollers or misalignment
- •Door jumps off the track: worn rollers, bent rail or both
- •Won't lock: usually an alignment problem, not a bad lock
What not to do
Don't spray WD-40 or grease on the track — it collects sand and makes the grinding worse. Don't try to lift a heavy glass panel out yourself; a dropped panel can shatter. And don't let anyone quote you a whole new door before they've looked at the rollers and track.
What it costs: $99–$375 per panel for standard repairs
On a standard residential sliding glass door, our repairs run $99–$375 per panel depending on the parts and labor involved. The estimate is free and you get the price before any work starts.
Impact doors need an on-site estimate
Impact-rated (hurricane) sliding doors are a different job. The panels are much heavier because of the laminated glass, the rollers and tracks are often brand-specific, and the frames are built to strict Florida code. Two impact doors that look the same can need very different parts and labor.
That's why we don't quote impact doors over the phone. We come out, look at the door, check the brand, the panel weight, the track and the rollers, and then give you an exact price. The on-site estimate is free.
