Sliding Door Weep Holes: Drainage Checks Before You Add Caulk

Some sill channels collect and drain water by design. Blocked drainage and water entering the room need different checks.

Need it fixed instead? See our sliding glass door repair service, or use our free estimate form. Standard repairs run $99–$375 per panel; impact doors need a free onsite estimate.

A drainage opening is not a gap to seal

Some patio door systems use sill channels and weep openings to route water outside. On applicable systems, a small amount of temporary water in the sill can be part of that design. This does not mean water entering your room is normal, or that every door uses the same drainage layout.

Andersen's contain-and-drain guidance applies to specified products. Identify your own door and follow its instructions before deciding which openings are meant to remain clear.

Safe checks on an intact, stable door

Look for loose debris on accessible sill surfaces. Use the manufacturer's approved cleaning method. Andersen describes gentle cleaning with a small brush or pipe cleaner on applicable weep holes; that is not permission to push tools deeply into every unidentified opening.

  • •Do not drill, enlarge or remove parts of the drainage system.
  • •Do not seal over intended drainage openings with caulk.
  • •Do not flood the sill to conduct an improvised leak test.
  • •Stop if the panel is unstable or the glass is damaged.

When clear weep holes are not enough

Persistent pooling or water reaching the interior can involve seals, sill condition, installation or other paths. A clear opening does not establish that the rest of the system is sound. Note when the water appears and its location, then request an assessment rather than adding sealant blindly.

Grinding movement is another issue: track repair and roller work do not automatically solve a leak. Our Dania Beach page discusses coastal hardware and drainage as separate checks. For a visit, share the symptoms through the estimate request; water-intrusion work needs its own assessment and quote.

What it costs: $99–$375 per panel for standard repairs

On a standard residential sliding glass door, our repairs run $99–$375 per panel depending on the parts and labor involved. The estimate is free and you get the price before any work starts.

Impact doors need an on-site estimate

Impact-rated (hurricane) sliding doors are a different job. The panels are much heavier because of the laminated glass, the rollers and tracks are often brand-specific, and the frames are built to strict Florida code. Two impact doors that look the same can need very different parts and labor.

That's why we don't quote impact doors over the phone. We come out, look at the door, check the brand, the panel weight, the track and the rollers, and then give you an exact price. The on-site estimate is free.
