Why Does My Sliding Patio Door Stick Halfway?

A repeatable catch is different from a door that feels heavy everywhere. Note the location—without forcing the glass panel.

Need it fixed instead? See our sliding glass door repair service, or use our free estimate form. Standard repairs run $99–$375 per panel; impact doors need a free onsite estimate.

A catch in one spot is a clue, not a diagnosis

A stable sliding door that catches at the same place may be meeting debris, a damaged section of rail or interference with the frame. A door that is heavy throughout its travel can also have worn rollers. Those symptoms overlap: a damaged wheel may run unevenly, while a worn rail can affect more than one point.

Do not repeatedly ram the panel past the catch. Notice where it happens during normal use and whether the panel scrapes, tilts or fails to close. If it is leaning, off-track or has damaged glass, stop using it and keep people away.

What you can check without lifting the panel

If the door is stable, look for loose debris on the accessible sill and vacuum it away. Follow the door maker's cleaning instructions; do not dig under the panel, pry the rail or turn unidentified frame screws. A visible dent or scrape is useful information to give the technician, not an invitation to hammer the rail flat.

  • •Does the catch happen opening, closing or both?
  • •Is the same spot affected after accessible debris is removed?
  • •Does the panel rub the frame or leave an uneven closing gap?
  • •Does the latch still engage without lifting or slamming?

How rollers and track work are assessed

We inspect the running surface, roller assemblies, panel position and clearance before recommending parts. A fitted track cap may help a suitable worn rail, but it is not a repair for every distorted or unstable frame. Compatible new rollers on a damaged rail can still run badly. See track repair and capping and roller replacement.

What it costs: $99–$375 per panel for standard repairs

On a standard residential sliding glass door, our repairs run $99–$375 per panel depending on the parts and labor involved. The estimate is free and you get the price before any work starts.

Impact doors need an on-site estimate

Impact-rated (hurricane) sliding doors are a different job. The panels are much heavier because of the laminated glass, the rollers and tracks are often brand-specific, and the frames are built to strict Florida code. Two impact doors that look the same can need very different parts and labor.

That's why we don't quote impact doors over the phone. We come out, look at the door, check the brand, the panel weight, the track and the rollers, and then give you an exact price. The on-site estimate is free.
