Why Is My Window Hard to Open or Won't Lock?

Most stuck or unlockable windows have a worn part — balance, roller or latch — not a failed window.

Need it fixed instead? See our sliding door roller replacement service, or use our free estimate form. Standard repairs run $99–$375 per panel; impact doors need a free onsite estimate.

What usually goes wrong

Salt air, sand and years of sun wear out the moving parts in windows. Horizontal sliding windows ride on small rollers just like patio doors, and single-hung windows rely on balances that weaken over time.

  • •Hard to slide sideways: worn rollers or a dirty track
  • •Won't stay up or slams down: failed balance
  • •Won't lock: misaligned sash or broken latch
  • •Drafts or rattles: worn weatherstripping

What not to do

Don't force a stuck sash or pry the latch — glass can crack and frames can bend. Clean loose debris from the track and stop there. Impact windows need extra care because the parts are brand-specific, so we inspect them on site before quoting.
