Fogged Sliding Glass Door? What Causes It and How to Fix It

Moisture trapped between the panes of your sliding door won't wipe off — because it's inside the glass. Here's what that means and why you usually don't need a new door.

Need it fixed instead? See our sliding glass door glass replacement service, or use our free estimate form. Standard repairs run $99–$375 per panel; impact doors need a free onsite estimate.

Why the glass fogs up

Most sliding glass doors use insulated glass: two panes with a sealed air space between them. When that edge seal fails, humid South Florida air gets inside and condenses, leaving fog, haze or white mineral streaks you can't clean.

Heat, direct afternoon sun and years of expansion and contraction are the usual causes. Once the seal is broken it will not reseal itself.

Signs the seal has failed

Check your door for any of these:

  • •Fog or condensation that can't be wiped off either side
  • •Cloudy haze or white streaks between the panes
  • •Water droplets visible inside the glass on hot mornings
  • •A room that feels warmer near the door than it used to

Replace the glass, not the door

If the frame, rollers and track are in good shape, we can replace only the fogged glass unit. We measure the panel, order the correct thickness and coating, and install it in the existing frame — far less than a new door.

While the panel is out, we check the rollers and track so the door slides smoothly once it's back in.

When a new door makes more sense

If several panels are fogged, the frame is corroded, or you want hurricane protection, a new impact-rated sliding door may be the better investment. We'll give you an honest recommendation either way.
